Problem! cats?

Hey all,

Lately when i've been driving my vy ss ute I've noticed at a very specific low revs it makes an almost grinding/rattling noise.

soon as the revs pick up the noise stops.

Also some days when i first start driving for the day, when i go to slow down to stop and put the clutch in the revs drop extremely low before picking back up again on the verge of stalling.

Ideas?

Ive googled the hell out of it and i'm thinking it sounds like the cats are dying?

Car has done 170,000kms, (i hear the average life of cats are 150?)


Next question is if it is the cats, what are your opinions of "smashing them out" or "hollowing" them?

Hollow cats r illegal.
If found can recieve a fine of $2000 an up.
All cats have a honey comb (unless removed personally) an depends on flow for performance.
If honey comb comes lose inside cat the honey comb will rattle inside cat

Get an exhaust shop to sus it out if you suspect cats. Don't just take their word for it though ask to see the damage.

Simple test is to get under the car and give the cats a couple good knocks. If you hear rattling coming from them then you're due for new cats.

Ok so i gave them a good thumping with a lump of wood, no obvious rattles.

It might be worth mentioning that over the time ive had the ute those poor cats have had an abusive relationship with a number of speedbumps.

have you checked everything running from your drive belt it sounds an awfull lot like air con is gone or something running from that drive belt. start by eliminating basics first than work onto more complicated ****.

my old VY i had to replace aircon unit due to shredding itself causing the same problems you started in 1st post. im pretty sure anything running along the drive belt would have the same effect.
