I'm having problems with the factory wiring to my front speakers, they are either earthing to the body or touching each other, its not behind the speakers and its not behind the head unit. Can anybody tell me if there is a prone place in the VN/VP where the front speaker wires earth out or shred and touch each other, just cause if i'm going to replace the front speaker wires i don't want to have the same problem cause its screwed a head unit so far.
Most likely if that has happened it will be inside the door jam, where the rubber tubing is. Get a multimeter and set it on ohms, then with the speaker disconnected put each proble on each speaker cable, if it comes up "0.00" then they are shorting together. Then try touching one cable with one probe then touch the other on an earthing point. Do this with both cables seperately, if either one comes up with "0.00" then that wire is earthing out. Edit; If when testing the wires with a multimeter and it shows 3.5-4 ohm then the wires are fine, but while the probes are connected open the door to which those wires run and watch the multimeter...any change in impedance will tell you its in the door jam. I would've just said to pull off the rubber tubing in the door jam and check for splits but sometimes the wire can break internally and is hard to pick up on visually.
It's also possible for the wires to fracture within the connecting tube between body and door. That happened to me years ago. The speakers would work when the door was closed, but died when it was oppened. One wire had just fatigued with the constant flexing of opening and closing the door over about ten years.
They're dash speakers so its not the door jam where the wires would've broken, as for the Resistance test I can't because its not always broken, they seem to go in and out on certain bumps, etc. I've double checked the wiring at the back on the head unit, removed front speaker output runs fine, plug fronts back in and there it goes again (when I hit a bump)
Well in thats case (I shoulda notice youve got a VP - dash speakers) I would run new cable to them from the headunit to elimate the stock wiring. It could also be the speakers themselves too, check to make sure the terminals on the speakers are fine and not broken too. Also, connect one of the front speakers up at a time and see if you can pinpoint which speaker in particular is doing it.
May sound stupid, but if a speaker is stuffed can it also cause this static occasional sound? if so maybe a should just replace and try. But now i'm thinking VR map pockets
Yeah it can cause static sound...but i would say the wiring or connections are at fault. Go with the VR pockets, theyre easy to fit and you'll get heaps better sound being able to use 6" speakers in a semi-decent mounting location as opposed to 4" mounted in the dash with next to no enclosure.
