problematic vr wagon

hi all been ages since i posted but i am here to find out some info to a problem my mate is having with his vr wagon. from what i gather he flicked on his high beams and he lost all lights and lost power from the car, also he was saying his tacho was going spastic whether it was connected to the fault with the original problem i am not sure, but i have narrowed it down to a lose wiring or broken wiring somewhere along the track from the engine harness connection to the battery or something in that vain. anyone out there with real ideas as to what it could be i would really be greatful to you. he also was saying that he lost power but can't remember what it was he said.
