HZ SL Kingswood
Hi,

Recently bought a 1979 HZ SL Kingswood.

When bought ran fine, went interstate for a couple of days came back wouldn't start.
Jumped it, started first go. Ran fine for the drive. Came back and no dice on the start. Sounds like the battery isn't charging and when trying to start whirrs out like no charge.

First thought was alternator, but car was running fine for the drive.
Next thought was battery, changed over batteries. Started fine, ran fine. Took out battery and wouldn't start the car it came out of.

Searched a fair bit on these forum threads and a few others. Can't seem to find an exact problem or a round-about solution for the problem.

Any ideas, advice or theories would be much appreciated.

Thanks

When car is driving, look for the alternator charge light on the dash - if it is lit up, alternator (or other part of charging system) is faulty - regulator?

yeah this is step 1. if the light doesnt come on, check the globe in the dash, if thats ok then check wiring.

easy way to tell if its charging, is start it up, then take the earth lead off the battery. if the car conks out, you got charging issues.

Love the HZ, we had a HZ Premier with a 308 all stock and what an amazing car, perfect for those long highway hauls.
Check out the Fastlane Forum site, those guys are the professionals on all things early Holden.

Go to supercheap Buy there 14 dollar multimeter and check the battery voltage whilst engine is running. If it's not 13v or above and been an old car double check on the B+ terminal on the alternator. If you get same reading it's the alternator. If by chance you have good voltage at the alternator replace the cable from alternator to battery
