    Hi Guys.

Having a few issues when starting the VS (Ecotec)

    1. In the morning on a cold start the engine will fire and run but will drop its revs to the point of almost stalling for the first 5 or so seconds of running....after that its fine...is this normal? (bearing in mind its the middle of winter)

    2. When the car has been sitting for 10 or more minutes and I start the engine I hear a light knocking/tapping noise....as soon as I start driving it dissapears but is always there when I start the engine....sounds like a lifter/valve problem or even the harmonic balancer but has anyone had the same symptoms...was thinking of going back to penrite full mineral + some lifter addative (running Castrol Edge Sport 25W50 at the moment)

The car still runs like brand new and still goes hard...no noticable leaks.

    Thanks Guys

The knocking could be a worn harmonic balancer which has a slight wobble although it should be visible if you watch the HB when idling....or could be a lifter although that is more of a tap.
For the drop in revs when cold possibly the ISC Idle Speed Control is a bit sticky and/or the throttle body is also suffering from a buildup of blowby deposits.....there is a "How-to" on cleaning them.
If your car is high mileage - over 300,000km, then I'd run a thicker oil, although it is winter so maybe that wouldn't be a good idea!.
    Good Luck.

Come to think of it the knock does seem to be coming from that area so could be that.

mine's wobbly and getting replaced soon, you can hear a slight knock every now and then, does it sound like the hb?
