Ok im pulling off my rocker covers and replacing the gaskets on my 1996 V6 Ecotech. It's an easy job I know, And i'm going to spray them black to match the engine cover while im at it. What i'm really wondering is what should I look for under here, what can tell me if there is abnormal wear?
shrapnel in the oil's a dead givaway! I'm not too sure how to check for wear without pulling individual parts out and measuring them
nothing in the oil, unless its below 50 microns, in which case i dont care about it anyway thanks for the reply hopefullt ill spot anything thats horribly bad.
hey mate where did you get your new gaskets from and how much were they? any chance you can do a how to for this? I need to fit some fit rockers in the next couple of weeks and have to remove rocker covers
which rockers you fitting. if it's YT ones they should have full fitting instructions with them i believe. removing the rocker covers is a matter of undoing the 6 bolts holding each one down.(the bolts stay in the rocker cover cause there held in there by a rubber sleave etc)
do u need a tension wrench 2 tighten back up i heard u did anyone confirm this? i was thinkn bout getting some chrome ones from autobahn wood they be worth getting or are they usless pieces of crap that will screw sumthing up?? cheers
immortality I'm more worried about how the covers seperate from the gasket. I know it's resuable but I will most likely put new ones on for peace of mind. Anyone know what gasket goo to use? mine are FIT btw
Ok well as far as experience tells me. The reusable rubber gaskets are not joined and should just fall/pull off. Loctite NON HARDENING sealent or fondly known as "Gasket Goo" is great its think like malasis and looks like it, it comes with a little paint brush, and should mess with anything nor does it go like sillicone or rubber and come loose on the inside of things. Undo the bolts, lift rocker cover. Do your lifter thing. Rip old gasket off. Place new gasket down, now here is the trick You should only goo ONE side of the gasket and use the tension to form the seal on the other, will with the rubber type you can probably do both, but I was told as a general rule to do that and then when removing parts the gasket will stick to one piece and not to the other halving the chance of ripping it. non the less ill take photos. B.T.W how hot does a Rocker cover get, I was thinking of painting mine with some heat resistant paint, Im sure there is chrome paint like that too for the person who was going to buy chrome ones
I need to replace mine too as I suspect that oil is coming out near the front of the rocker cover. Pics would be really good!!
Umm sure, wow is there something special about the ecotech rocker covers I should know, its being made out to be such a major mission
I don't think it's a mission just I dont want to f**k it up you know. I'd rather learn from someone else doing it. I'm really good at pulling stuff apart it's the getting it back together that gets me Rocker cover shouldn't get that hot. Even so I painted some with caliper paint. Exhaust paint is also good to use.
gents, the best thing with the ecotec is the gasket is rubber, i grabbed a pair of gaskets when i did my RR and really didnt need them, the i dont have any pics n it was a while ago but the gasket just runs in a grove in the rocket covers.. so its not like a throttle body gasket or thermostat gasket that covers the full matting surface of both head and covers. the rubber was fine, but i replaced em coz i bought them nothing major but can be a lil fiddly on the drivers side getting the cover back on, with gasket in place around the support rod of the alt. let me know if u need more info
No. Well....yes, they have a torque setting but if you don't have a tension wrench, tight but not super tight. Do them up firm and check for oil leaks after a couple of days.
