hey people, left side rear axle solid diff having truoble pulling it out. pulled off rotor undid the four bolts, should it just pull out or does it need some hard whacks. also the handbrake shoes can they stay as they are or do they have to be taken off. we are getting a grinding noise taking left hand turns thinking the bearings are gone, got an axle from wreckers to replace. thanks

Make sure the handbrake is off and then refit the brake disc (rotor) backwards with the nuts loose and use it as a slide hammer.

im just curious, but how do you go about refitting? will it just "slide" on in and then once everything is replaced it will stay?

Iv'e never done the job before, but would like to know incase it ever comes up.

The 4 bolts hold a fairly heavy retaining plate which secures the bearing/axle in the diff housing. The bearing is pressed onto the shaft and then a retainer ring is pressed flush up against the bearing. This setup is more or less fail-proof.

I think Dannyboy was asking about refitting the axle to the car.

Yes, it just slides in, with a bit of effort. You need to wiggle it so it engages the diff gear, then push it in hard. If the retaining plate sits against the diff housing, it is all the way in. If it isn't, wiggle it in and out a little bit until it slides home. A bit like a virgin....

Put it down to old-age, at least I answered the last part of his question: and then once everything is replaced it will stay?....
