I`m looking at upgrading my car soon and the $$ I can afford put me at a vt/x ls1 ( want my v8 back ). I have had nothing to do with the ls1 and only know what I have read about them. I have heard some
bad storys about piston slap/oil pump issues and engine rebilds at very low kms.

My questions is how to pick a good one and what to look for. How many kms is to many? And so on.

With the piston slap I think that got fixed under warranty in the VT, as far as kms it depends on condition of the car and price. Things to look out for would be scrapes, dents or just any damage in general on the undercarriage of the car. (kerb hopping) Next would be any signs of any fluid leakage on the motor and ground, also when getting back from your test drive park the car in a different spot then look again for fluid leakage on the ground. If you hear any obvious bad noises comming from the car and motor ask about it and also ask for the log books and any work done on the car.
    Goodluck
