Hi all .... help me out here. I'm at that stage where I'm thinking of buying a car. Stressful isnt it? :bang: I am leaning towards a second hand Holden, possibly a VT or VX. Now, maybe this is a ludicrous question to ask on a Commodore 'blog', but what I'd like you all to tell me is WHY I should buy a Commodore over lets say an AU Falcon, or a Toyota Avalon? I've been driving for more years than I care to remember, but never owned a Holden. Share your knowledge:bow: and wisdom, and tell me why I should or, indeed, should not. Thanks in advance.
imo, it all comes down to personal pref. i bought my commy coz: 1. its a rear-wheel drive (unlike magnas, camry's, etc) 2. its a v6, which means it gets me from mbridge to adelaide every week with no probs getting up those hills along the freeway 3. commo's r reliable, iv been told their engines arent even considered worked til they've at least hit the 300k mark 4. i LOVE holdens (go figure), iv just grown up in a holden-loving family i guess, and iv heard too many stories of sh** falcons! 5. i love the vx commy, its shape etc, and its equivalent is pretty much the TL magna (ugly as hell), AUIII falcon (even uglier), or the camry.... so thats my spiel anyways. go with the heart! and the foot... :whistling EDIT: the BA falcons arent too bad tho.. one thing ford did right lol
depends on what you want, and how much you want to spend, let say you want something thats extremely reliable, cheap to buy and good fit and finish, if you want that buy an Avalon but be prepared to pay a price in depreciation, my parents have one and i can say its one exceptional car in 5 years they have had its never been to a mechanic for repairs only just log book servicing, if you want something thats got good resale value(except the au falcon), not bad on fuel, a little rough around the edges buy a falcodore, ive got my vs and after 11 years it still faring pretty well minus a couple visual things
Commodore obviously, but as other ppl mentioned the ba>series falcons are good too, forget the au.cars guide have ba falcons on sale round the 12-13 mark so itd be close to the au value anyway but the vx wuld be ur best bet, nice shape, reliable.we culd all go on about holdens bud.saw a nice 02 calais for 17gs with only 63 thou on the clock.
The truth will out ...... Well, this site opened my eyes a bit, its not too kind on VT's .... http://www.choice.com.au/viewArticle.aspx?id=102504&catId=100477&tid=100008&p=4&title=Car+reliability+(archived)
bah who cares about that, face it your either lucky to get a good car or buy a lemon, at the end of the day large cars like the falcon/commodore where sold by the truck loads in the 90's, in these days when people mainly buy small car like pos kias and hyundais they are the ones you will hear about soon
Small cars rule? Well, surprisingly, cars like the Nissan Pulsar, Ford Festiva, Daewoo Lanos etc outdid both Commodores and Falcons in the reliability stakes. But then, I guess reliability is only a single criteria that makes us choose a certain 'type' of vehicle. Many factors come to mind in the process of choice. Heres the page anyway: http://www.choice.com.au/viewArticle.aspx?id=102504&catId=100477&tid=100008&p=4&title=Car+reliability+(archived)
just ask yourself, what car would u like to see yourself sitting in? if your after zippy little cars that run on the sniff of petty, go a small festiva or daewoo etc. if u want a sporty car, go the celica, silvia, skyline, etc. if u want a big engine, a bit of grunt, and with cheap readily-available parts for servicing, go a commy or falcon. like what andyman said, its just luck if u end up not buying a lemon.. so go with whatever u want :driving:
well for me when i choose my vs v6 calais it was for saftey, reliabilityandcomfort! i went to the nrma crash site and looked up the cars saftey the vs scored very high for crash safety! and with that in mind coupled with the fact the are cheap to fix and run(provided you dont mod them to much and have a lead foot!) they are a good all round vehicle! as for fords?? fords like all cars have their faults but a good cars aswell and depending on how you drive them you can get better economy than a v6! and if your looking at getting a ford for value for money you cant go past an au! sure they arent that good looking but they held up better in the crash test than the new ba model! just my advice but at the end of the day be happy with what you buy!
More is best? Surely, at the end of the day, the satisfaction we get from owning a particular type or make of car, is inversely proportional to the amount of cash you may need to blow on annoying, regular repairs that are due to poor quality parts and/or workmanship. The fact that spares are easy to access, and are modestly priced, wears thin after a string of nightmare faults.:bang: If you buy from a corporation with good quality control, 'lemons' should be a minimal consideration. Its a fact that some manufacturers have a dismal record. From what I've seen of late, asian based car makers seem (sadly) to have the edge.:yeah: My point? Maybe our two 'big boys' (Ford and Holden) should take a very close look at their quality of output, as opposed to quantity.
