    Hey guys,
Got a stock 308 VK which will have a stage 4 cam shortly.
It was originally auto and the previous owner installed an M21 with bellhousing of course.
    Will be running twin webers.
    I've just sourced a 3.55 salisbury diff.
Other mods will include roller rockers LT1 valve springs.

Question is, with the unreliable M21, I'm worried about the torque and HP when I downshift etc.
I don't do burnouts, but want my car close to Group C specs.
I doubt the M21 will handle the extra mods, what would be the easiest gearbox to match the existing bellhousing to perform better, or would I have to ditch the bellhousing and start over?
Originally had an M40 auto trans from the build plate.
    Thanks.

What are the cam specs? I wouldn't worry about changing the box if you're not going to be sidestepping the clutch. The salisbury's aren't all that strong anyway, you probably have a 50/50 chance of breaking the gearbox or the diff first. The old aussie boxes seem to handle a fair bit of abuse before they let go. After all, the existing boxes have survived over 40 years of use and abuse by now so have withstood the test of time. Just make sure the linkages are tight so you never risk having more than one gear engaged at any one time.

They're a cheap box and still easy to get hold of and they don't take long to change if you damage one. If you ever got stuck, the aussie 3 speeds are a great box too and are great fun to drive with the long second gear (if it's just a cruiser of course).

Ultimately I'd definitely use a th700 (it's an auto, I know :p) but you'd need to have the block redrilled which is out of the question for you I'm sure.

I've just heard so many stories about M21 breakdowns during downshifting, but if you think it will hold up, I'll stay with it I guess. Only want a manual gearbox, a bit more fun ;)

easiest would be to put a tri back in. for a manual, if its still working ok id keep using it ( with great care ) and go look for a supra 5 speed conversion

The Supra is the go if you need to do a change. Of course then it's 'conversion' time with more bits needed. You might have to think about how "close to Group C" is important to you.

... I have run an M21 in motor racing for the past 7 years
properly built , shifter properly adjusted and with an annual teardown, that same box is now in its 8th year
(and I might add, I am shovelling just over 200rwkw thru it)

the only thing with an M21 do not go dumping the clutch and expect it to live

oh... and if you want a box like they used in Grp C then the T10/Super T10 is the go (coz thats what they used )
It will need a bellhousing / tailshaft / clutch change though

A mate of mine runs a 360rwhp 355 through his M21 and he doesn't treat it very kindly! As Smitty said properly built they are ok if you don't plan on abusing it. I have one in my VK and find it a good box, it was built by a guy who has done quie a few over the years. Just my 2c worth.

Everything for this conversion is available off the shelf.....The conversion can be done in a day, stuffing around.

The only modification required is to drill 4 holes in the gearbox cross member so the Toyota gearbox mount bolts to it

I have one in my 6 CYL VC....I took the motor out, bolted the gearbox to it and put it back in.....Done in a day, stuff assing around

Need any information on where to get the parts, holla

Thanks for the info guys much appreciated. I'll stick with the M21 for now and see how it goes. Thanks for the options you suggested.
I don't do burnouts, but I do like to drive it hard when I can, freeways, taking off without wheelspin etc.
