Wait... if you cracked his bumper... why don't you pay for it to be fixed?

As it has been said, for something this samll... leave out the insurance company

It will be about the same as the excess and everyone is happy...

if the bumper is cracked, the damage is far more substantial than that.
the reo will be damaged, the mounts will be damaged, the body will be damaged, the quarters will also have damage etc etc.
it may sound far fetched but its not.
a simple little tap on the bumper can come out at 2-3k worth of damage.

cracks arent hard to get in bumpers!

The mounts WILL be damaged huh?

The body WILL be damaged huh?

And the quarter panels WILL have damage too... really?

Damn... you're pretty dam ngood... considering he hasn't even put up pictures...

lol... mate... I have to say... you sound like a fool making statements like that.

If you said that there MAY be damage to all that... I could agree...

For there to be that much damage... you would expect him to have more damage than a bent plate and the ute would have a damaged tailgate you would think.

Need more details to make the statements you made...

ok fine, change 'will' to 'possibly' then.
just pointing out that its not always as simple as 'cracked bar' and thats it.
any panel beater will tell you the same thing.

wen I got hit in the rear it damaged the drivers side quarter, the boot lid, the reo, the bar, the mounts, the boot (Floorpan?) and a whole bunch of otherbits and peices like the lights, etc, etc.

But when I got hit it was a fair whack, so it's all possible, go get a few quotes and have them assess the vehicle, if you get a few quotes you can quickly compare them and see if anything looks like it could be bullshit added to make money or whatnot, but you have to be damn sure, not everyone out there is a prick.

Just in the case of who is at fault, not ALL rear enders are the rear enders fault, if you fail to give way and get rear ended, it's your own fault (Just an example) if you do a right hand turn across an intersection while a red arrow for right hand turns is facing you it's your own fault as well.

My advice is go get some quotes and go from there, you should be able to find a company that repairs bars and they do a good job too (Pretty sure they garentuee the repair)

If you don't put an insurance claim in the second it occurs it isn't a big deal, so take some time and sort out some other options.

That I can agree with...

Car's do have a nasty habit of hiding the damage till a few panels are removed and you get a chance for a closer look...

not only will you be footing the bill if you choose not to go through your insurer, you will most likely have to pay his excess as well since you were at fault.

Wrong. Whoever is at fault in any accident has to pay the damages. If the damages are more than the cost of your excess fee, then you'd be going through your insurance company and paying your own excess.
The other driver, who was not at fault, pays no damages. Therefore there's no excess fee of theirs to pay, only your own.
