Just a quick question, as I don't have a workshop manual to check.

I have a VH with a 253. I'm checking the wiring. The alternator has 2 wires on it, the charge wire which obviously connects to the +ve battery terminal and another, which I believe is for the warning light on the dash. How is this meant to be wired? Should the wire go from the back of the alternator to the dash light to an ignition power feed? Or to ground? Or what?

Thanks, hopefully this is an easy question to answer.

Also, for interest sake, is this wire required for operation of the alternator? Is it a field voltage reference point or something or just purely for the light on the dash?

not 100% but the light should have +ve supplied when the key is on. the -ve should then come from the alt. that is how the other warning lights are wired.

That makes sense. I'd liek to be 100% sure though, does anyone have a workshop manual so they can confirm it for me?

Thanks for that. Can someone please scan for me or point me in the direction of a wiring diagram that shows that so I can call the auto electrician on his bullshit and get my less-than-1-month-old alternator replaced or repaired? It would be a huge help, thanks in advance.
