HSV has unveiled plans for a new one-make race series and the GTS/R is the star.

The GTS/R was unveiled at the Australian International Motor Show on Thursday and features the new LS2 V8 engine, unique to HSV.

It produces a massive 335kW of power and 605Nm of torque and is matched to a close ratio six-speed manual box.

Dual stainless steel 2 1/2-inch exhausts protrude from underneath the door sill.

The GTS/R sits on 19-inch rims and rubber, has AP racing 374mm Carbon Ceramic cross drilled rotors on full floating aluminium hats with six-piston callipers.

It has flared wheel arches, ground-hugging sills and a very low, wide-track stance.

The car has been built primarily for motor sport and HSV, in combination with the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS), are assessing the one-make series to create a new race category that will be a stepping stone to V8 Supercars.

HSV managing director John Crennan says the company has big plans for the car, hence the reinvention of the GTS/R nameplate.

"This car will hit the bitumen not as a road car, but a versatile HSV product intended for a range of racetrack projects."

Already two orders have been received from the Malaysian Grand Prix to evaluate a one-make series in that country.

The car's styling is based on the sleek-designed body of HSV's Coupe4 and acts as a preview of what may be to come. "What we are trying to do is preview some processes that we'd like to use on future HSV models," HSV head of design Julian Quincey says.

Inside, the GTS/R is set up for the track. It has a race-tech competition seat with helmet support, full-chrome roll cage, six-point harness, carbon-fibre instrument, floor and door panels, a three-spoke steering wheel and fully integrated fire extinguisher with nozzles in the engine bay, cabin and rear compartments.

Quincey says most of what is on the GTS/R show car is there for a reason, such as the mesh grilled vents at the rear of the front guards. "You get high pressure build-up at the back of the wheel arches so the vents are there to reduce that."

The GTS/R also features HID headlights, LED rear tail-lights, a lightweight switch console with start button, circuit breakers and relays, a lightweight wiring harness, Motec ADL data logger and instrument and a heating element for the front windscreen.

HSV used the unveiling to announce its joint venture with Linfox – both are now the proud owners of the grand prix circuit at Phillip Island. The GTS/R will play a key role in this partnership. A fleet of the cars will be used to provide hot laps around the circuit for the 500,000 tourists who visit the island each year. Anyone who buys a Z series HSV will also get the same opportunity.

Andrew Fox of the Linfox Property Group says they are very excited about the partnership. "This is just part of our multi-million dollar expansion of the Phillip Island grand prix circuit and its facilities, which are designed to both dramatically improve the visitor experience and at the same time significantly upgrade the circuit for racers among whom of course will be HSV-supported V8 Supercars in 2005."

i'm interested in how they would certify this car. if it's going to be registered for road use, it needs to meet full govt reqm'ts. that means airbag, etc, which aren't useful for track use.

i don't get it. i think this is a dumb idea.

it's a road car, it's doesn't matter how many carbon fibre bits you glue on, it's not a race car.

who would buy this thing purely for track use? maybe i'm just cynical.

if you want a great track car, look at what they build in britain, caterhams, westfields. those things are like mini-formula one cars. on the track they would leave a monaro like it was standing still.

the advantage of a monaro is it is a really good road car. it's a mistake to think it's a track weapon only.
