93 VR commodore just done 207000 kms and the rack needs replacing. bought the car cheap and fixing it up for rwc and rego. anyone know much for the rack and the work involved $$$. also its leaking oil from the orange thing on the rack too. is this common in commodores of that age?
Yes, very common. You can replace the seals, but chances are the shafts are worn too so a recon rack would be the best thing. Over here they go for around $400 for an exchange unit.
Check out our sponsors they might be able to help you out, otherwise I know pedders do them cheaper then $400 for the unit, not sure on the fitting price, but its a piss simple job, just mark everything before it comes off and then go straight in for an alignment.
If you want to do it cheaper just go to a wrecker and ask how much for a rack which is guaranteed to pass the roadworthy check. Reputable wreckers will check such items before removal from the wreck and guarantee it. Good Luck.
will the rack come with the orange thing thats leaking oil. i have no idea about the work involved. does the rack come with all new rubbers and boots for the left and right side? im having a few things done to pass roadworthy : cleaning oil around the bell housing rack spout and boot. rack boots replaced, rack sloppy(replacing rack) sway bar link rubbers replaced both upper arms replaced. all that done for around $900. is that good for parts and labor?
An exchange rack will come with everything required to bolt it into the car, except tie rod ends. The orange thing is just a dust seal, the oil seal is inside the valve body where the input shaft goes. Yes it does come with the orange thing.
i got my whole front end redone new rack all new bushes tie rod ends basically everything (used to shudder a bit at about 100kmh) plus two new bridgestone potenzas and a wheel alignment for just under $1500 including all labour
