you can be defected for not having water in the washer res so yeah...

itll depend on how much of an ass the cop is... why does it need to be off though?

    short answer, yes you can.

Hmm i'll leave it on then. If a cop sticks his or her head under the bonnet, i doubt they will notice if there is no water in the res, but they will notice that the shroud is missing.

I was gonna take it off because it makes the bay look a little more roomy, and IMO, looks a bit better, but if it's defectable, then i'm going to leave it on.

with that said, most things are defectable... thats more a safety issue with hands and moving sharp things and the what not...

Take it off, DO IT!, its only a ****y plastic fan anyway, unlike the savage metal ones on V8's. Edit: just read above and yes it does direct air to the engine...

Can you even take the shroud off on them?
Rnt they just a single thermo, and the shroud is the fan unit anyway?

If the fan doesnt protrude from the extensions of the radiator I doubt that it is a roadworthy item. That being said, I dont know how you are actually going to mount the fan without the shroud, its all integrated is it not? The shroud is there for a reason, for more effective cooling when ram air is insufficient. The radiator is going to reject more heat by all of it getting a small air flow rather than only some of it(that in front of the fans) getting most of the flow when you dont use a shroud..

Certainly on engine driven fans where the fan blades go over the top of the radiator one needs a complete perimeter inclosing shroud or a fan guard(simple metal plate they fitted to all old holdens that attached to the bonnet latch that just went over the top of the fan) . This was typically only for clutch fans as the fixed fans werent as large in diameter.
