Thank you all for you help, the cost of repair through a mechanical workshop or trans specialist is up to $3000 its become over what the car is worth. my conclusion is a second hand transmission either new or second hand radiator. The next problem is am I up to being able to do it, I'm yet to decide. is the body and interior of the car in good enough condition to spend all the time and money? the more I look at it the less I think of it being worth it. even though I have an emotional attachment to this car because I've been driving it for the past 7 years and its been an awesome car My final decision is , I can afford to go and buy another car which seems the more logical way to go, scrap the past and have a new start is what I going to do. Thank you all for your help, it became quite a process to work through this issue

That’s a fair call.

If the car is now essentially scrap value (repair cost is about the worth of the car), there is little financial risk in trying what @Ginger Beer suggested in post #10. For the cost of a replacement radiator and a **** load of transmission fluid it *might* come good. I wouldn’t bother with coolant (just use water) for a few weeks until you are certain it is fine.

I missed the bit about flushing the cooling system, whist cheap to do, it is time consuming like the trans flush

I think we flushed the cooling system a few times, (remember to have the heater in the car on) with straight water, when it was cleanish we added radiator flush, ran it to temp, then flushed a few more times, then, drained the system and filled with coolant

I think this was the messiest part of the whole job, as we probably used over 100 ltrs of water

I used the car to take a trailer load of rubbish to the tip 2 days ago just a 10 minute drive at low speed, it went really well so chrisp as a last resort I will do what you and ginger bear suggested. drain, fill, flush and refill, it will either work or it won't
