hi well today i went to start my vs and it just cranked over and nothing not even tried to start...so i thorght WTF anyway for some reason it had no fuel (had fuel last night and was driving fine!!) maybe someone stole it as it was parked on strret so have a done damage to the fuel pump?? i cranked it for about 4 seconds and then a few more times untill i herd the fuel pump sucking air and knew what it was, this is the first time this pump has run dry(goss pump) and the first time the car has too. The pump sounds fine now but could i have damaged the pump as i hear they dont like going dry? i do run it down to the fuel light and even lower sometimes (not lastnight though) i know thats bad for em but ye sometimes fuel station is not open when i fin work
Hard to say really. I don't know why you would want to run your car that low but anyway. Throw some fuel in see what happens if you have no bad noises all good. If your paranoid swap it out.
I'd say it should b alrite. It doesn't hurt it too much running dry it's mainly the **** it picks up from the bottom of the tank that stuffs em. As long as u dnt do it all the time. Beta get a locking cap if ya getn ur tank siphoned buy sum mongrel.
Pump should be fine run dry for a few seconds if it is not old, old pumps tend to die pretty quickly when run dry.
I always drive my VS for around 30-40 km after the the low fuel light has come on and the low fuel buzzer have gone off. Ive only had to replace the fuel pump once about 6 or 7 years ago, when I first got the car. The fuel pump sits down inside the swirl pot in the fuel tank, and the swirl pot has a continuous flow of fuel going into it from the fuel return line, so the pump is always being cooled by the fuel that being returned to the fuel tank from the fuel rail. Its definitely not good to run these cars right out of fuel though, and once out of fuel, the pump will overheat and stuff up in no time at all.(it would take a bit longer than just a few seconds of dry running though Id think). When my fuel level is near empty, and Im driving around corners etc, I always try to slosh the fuel around heaps, just to stir it all up in there, this helps keep the fuel tank clean, because any dirt etc sitting on the bottom of the tank, gets mixed with the fuel ,then its gets sucked up with the fuel and trapped in the fuel filter, where its then removed along with the old filter at service time. You certainly dont want a heap of dirt and rubbish building up on the bottom of the tank over time, because if a heap of it gets dislodged and sucked up all at once, it will just completely block up the fuel system. I cant believe the recommended fuel filter service interval for these cars is 24 months or 40,000 km, seeing how dirty mine always is at just 5000 km, and I dont even drive my car on dirt roads. I service my fuel filter every 5000 km when I change my engine oil and filter. Fuel filters are a $10 part, so its not a big deal to change it often.. Also I always check the fuel thats left in the old fuel filter to see how dirty it is, and youd be suprised how dirty the filter gets at only 5000 km, I wouldnt like to run them much further. Im always careful when refuelling not to get dirt etc in the tank, so there must be a hell of a lot of dirt in the fuel we buy, I only use 98 octane fuels. I had to replace my fuel tank at one stage, and it was spotlessly clean when I fitted it, so its not like its just picking up old dirt thats built up on the bottom of the tank over the years, the dirt must come from the servos underground tanks or from the trucks that fill the servos tanks.
Ive drove my car on the earge of no petrol, about 3 times in a week. still runs fine.. Bit hard on starting now. If you killed your fuel pump, you wont hear anything from the tank when you first turn the key on..
I drove home once low on gas. got back in a few hours later, started it up. The car started to miss and died immediately in the drive way. Filled it up with gas and drove away laughing ( a tad bit embarrassed too haha.
