I own a SS 96 VS, I noticed a month back over bumps at highway speeds there was a knock comming from under the car in the transmission tunnel area, I thought it was the mount, since replacing the mount the noise is there after a couple mins of driving, noticable over bumps and now at 80kms and sometimes 60kms over bumps and without. Im leaning towards tail shaft, ive checked the torque converter, flex plate and bolts, checked harmonic balancer, engine mounts dunno what else it could be, it couldn,t be engine cause it was origially over bumps and still is kinda. Any ideas?
well it's a far shot, but maybe your control arm bushes are done. sounds like mine a few years back, diff was rolling onto control arm bolts and knocking under throttle and brake, aswell as just driving
Here is another far shot, but it has happened to me in the past. It could be the rubber bushes in the sway arm, or another that it can be is a small bulge in one of your tyres. In your case if it is a bulge, it will be one of the back tyres. If the noises were in the front end, I would be putting my money on the Harmonic Ballancer.
so its a knock not a scrape of ne thing hittin the road?? seeing as it got worse when ya replace the transmission mount u sure u done it up tight and put it all back how it is meant 2.. u havent lowered ur car without getting approiate work done 2 tailshaft cos sometimes needs 2 b realigned if lowered 2 far.. tailshaft is usually pretty dirty get under car spin it and look for ne marks on it that look like it might of been cause by knockin..
Have you checked the centre bearing on the tail shaft? When the rubber mount goes it bangs around in the bracket when hitting bumps. Also check the cat.
Its not the cat, I think it maybe the centre bearing there is some grease sprayed out from the centre bearing but i dunno, how much is a new centre bearing?
$150 or there abouts. Not much to change it but you have to mark every bit you take apart to make sure it goes back together exactly the same way or it will vibrate.
the rubber isn't broken at the centre bearing, so I dunno, but the cv joint at the centre bearing has lost a lot of grease. if it was the harmonic balancer could you feel the clunk on the floor
how low is the car for a start??? it could be the pinion flange hitting the floor pan if its got ultralows or something of similar height. check the bump stops maybe.
no its just got the standard fe2. i have just realised it cant be the tailshaft. sometimes i can get it to make the noise sitting there reving the engine in neutral. its just strange it does it over bumps too...???
found out what it is, the y piece for the pacemakers was hitting on a little bit of the trans cross member, grinded it off, and its all good
