Is MF5 just the N/A RB30 box? If so, the only difference between the two is that the RB20 box has double sychros.

Yes, that is the only difference. Neither is stronger than the other, they are both the same strength wise.

A stock SR will strip a gear in one of these boxes depending on what kind of driving your doing (lots of clutch kicks etc...). I personally know of at least one person running 250kw behind one of these with no problem, it also depend on what your torque/power curve is like too.

The mf5 was the bog stock vl/r31 manual, me7 was the turbo box and apparently stronger.... but finding a good one in either variety secondhand 27 years on and being hard to find a VL not far off it's half million km birthday.....

Finding a skyline equiv gearbox that hasn't had it's guts thrashed out also....... as good as nissan engineering is you need to be able to see what wears in them and find a seller willing to let you rip it to pieces or send it to a professional to check it over before handing over any cash.

R33 box will work and handle more power than an me7, and yeah rb20 box and the me-5 are on par for strength.
. There are t-56 conversions available I believe.... If ya wanna splash out

Seen one of these in the flesh, very similar in size to an R33 box.
