Hey guys, i just finished installing my rebuilt transmission. I did it myself. After the install added fluid and went to drive. Reverse works. However, d doesnt work, its like its in nutral, if i manually shift it works for 1st and 2nd. 3rd has a huge clunk and when i go to put it into d it just revs out. Any ideas? Im worried ill have top take it to a specilist and pay through the roof.

    Cheers.

That's bad news after all that work though I'm sure it's something simple like a ball missing from a valve. Never having attempted what you've done I guess all I can add is to maybe view (again) one of those step by step videos on overhauling the 4L60E.
    Don't you dare give in!!!

Ive looked into doing this this before, and when I went to talk to a couple of trans specialists, theres so many specs that have to checked and rechecked, and seals that can can be stuffed if they are not fitted correctly with the correct tools etc, so I didnt bother looking any further. Its easier to just go buy second hand ones that are still in ok condition.

Dont give up just yet, My dad rebuilt his trans in his VK on axle stands in his shed one weekend so he could drive to work.

Its a long shot but fiddle with the servo. Kid at tech pulled his out, your going to laugh at this. the tutor told him to so he could reach his kick down cable inside the trans. Anyway he had the rans out to replace rear crank seal. He reinstalled the box and reversed it of the four post hoist then put it in drive and wondered why it wouldn't move! so he gave up and put a manual in it. cough cough hint hint lol

    (wasn't a commodore though, 1jz soarer)

What manuals do you have for the 4l60e,Do you have any that show the function of each component?

Mate I feel your pain, I have just finished rebuilding a 4L60E as well I have had the box in and out 5 times now due to various issues mostly my own stupid fault

What did you end up replacing in your build?
Given that you have reverse your reverse input drum clutches are OK and your lo/reverse clutches are also OK
did you replace the two shift solenoids?
Did you replace/remove the forward sprag? you may have it in backwards or it has failed
Could be the 3/4 clutch not engaging - did you air check these and what was the free play should be 0.8 to 1.9mm from memory
Did you play around with the valve body, if so triple check everything there as i even made s dumb mistake in mine
My latest failure was the retainers for the lo/reverse spring clip all sheared off - most likely to either a worn case or me not putting the anti clunk spring in properly

Thanks for all your coments. Ill be calling up a local transmission joint to get a quote on them tearing it down and putting it back together and only replace what ever is broken (as i had to drive 40mins down the highway to get it home). Im expecting atlest $180 in labour for removal and fitting of the box. Due to this iv had to tell my boss that i can no longer work (as this is my work car due to no more company cars). Sometimes i regret buying a commodore but its always been a love/hate relationship for this lovely hunk of ****. Ill let you guys know what was up when i find out anyways.

look it can happen with any car mate, I have spent the last 3 weekends lying under mine fitting and removing the gearbox due to the various issues I have had it was about 5 seconds away from becoming a manual but alas the 5th time fitted it is working well except the new torque converter is a little bit higher stall than it should have been - stalls at 3000rpm not very street friendly so guess what has to come out yet again

I am sure it will be something silly as most of my issues were

Yea, im just worried ill lose my job over it, its sorta depressing forking out that sort of coin to discover it didnt work. However i just got off the phone to the transmission joint and worst case ill be up for $600 and they will put all my upgraded bits into another box. Still have my old one in my boot if they need a new case or other bits atleast.

That's why most people were saying in your other thread, that you should leave it to the professionals.
Anyway I hope you get it all sorted in the end, hopefully for less that $600 as well.

To update this thread this is how it goes. I put a one way sprag in backwards. WHen i put the pump in, apartently it didnt go in straight or something close to that and damaged the input drum. Those were my mistakes. However, the new wide alto band that was attached to the new reverse input drum had failed in a way. It was barly touching the drum for connection.

So i ended up getting those parts replaced, the band was a kevlar standard size one i had spare (new) and chucked a shift kit in. The end cost hasnt been figured out yet as im working off some of the bill at their shop doing box changes. So heres hoping it wont cost too much.

Car back today, so far not so good. TC lock up isnt working with no pedal and wont lock sometimes under pedal, wont hold first, instant shift into second then when the revs are high goes back to first. Will try a different tune tomorrow as the lastest one i put in caused some dramas for my old box as well.
