I am getting my vh ready to be painted (again) and I am stripping all the chrome off. The seals on the door belt need replacing and the chrome is not too good on a couple of them. The price of new ones are over $120 each. Has anyone had any of their mouldings rechromed and how much did it cost?

Chrome? I think you find they are stainless steel, best way is to wet sand starting from 800grid wet n dry sand paper and work your way down to finest sand paper you can find, ie: start with 800g then 1000g then 1200g, if you can find sand paper up to 3000 grid is best but it hard to find. the really fine stuff and not cheap either, then polish the hell out of it with metal polish, the longer you spend on each step the better the finish will be

If you really want them to shine like chrome take them to a jeweller and get them buffed on a wheel with jeweller's rouge. Or if you have a bench grinder you can get the cloth mops to fit and rouge sticks from an abrasives supply place and do them yourself.

Thanks for your help. This will certainly save me a few bob and it's not if I don't have plenty of time.

I tried sanding one I won't be using. The coating came off fairly easy so would suggest that they are not stainless. Next I tried cutting them with a pair of tin snips. Far to soft for stainless.

I thought those things were diecast (zinc & tin?)?

I tried to get them rechromed here in Ipswich quite a while ago. They wouldn't touch them and that might have been why. They referred me to a place in north Brisbane who do classic car stuff.
