I need to take out the rear axel/diff assembly for diff work, and the only thing i'm unsure of is what to do with the brake lines. I was thinking of putting a line locker on the hose above the diff and disconnecting it there. But i really have no idea. Also, do i just disconnect the hand brake cables where they connect near the rotors? Where do you guys disconnect it? I'm going to be changing the brake fluid upon re-assembly. Is there anything i should know?
Thats ok, just block/clamp off the flex hose from the body to the diff and leave all the other lines on the housing unless you need to remove them for painting or such. If your using vice grips or similar put something soft (cloth or plastic) between the teeth and the hose. Of cause if you have braided hose then this wont work with out damaging the hose. You can purchase special flex hose clamps from most auto shops. Also if you have a plumber friend he may have a plastic gas pipe shut off clamp.
The cables come off at the discs as you mention - try not to lose too much brake fluid to avoid the master cylinder running dry which is a pain to get the air out of sometimes. You can remove the lid off the master cylinder and place some GlarWrap over the container and then put the lid back on - this makes an airtight seal and minimises any brake fluid loss. Also put plastic or GladWrap over any brake line ends to prevent dirt ingress. Good Luck.
