Hi,

I've recently been told by the RACQ that my fuel pump needs replacing...I have very little knowledge about cars but would prefer not to pay a mechanic to fix it.

Does anyone know how to replace it? I haven't been able to find a how-to guide.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah, it's a 94 VS.

Cheers,

Zac.

Firstly, I am pretty sure there is no such thing as a 94 VS

Secondly, if you don't know much about cars, go and buy yourself a Gregory's manual. It will definitely pay for itself in time.

With regards to the fuel pump, if you look at enough threads you can work out what you have to do. Long time since I did mine so I am sorry I can't really help you out there. From memory:

I pulled the fuel relay out
Got under the car and undid the bolts holding the fuel pump assembly in
Pulled the assembly out (I think you have to make sure the return hose doesn't fall into the tank)
Fitted the new pump
Reinstalled the assembly (with a new cork gasket that came with the pump)
Put the fuel relay back in

But as I said earlier, you will benefit from the detail in the Gregory's.

yeah its not that hard to do except when putting the new one in you have to sort of twist it to locate it properly. It can be a real pain in the a** but just as you will feel like giving up it will just slot in

If you have some ramps to lift the car, it will make it much easier.
I've had to do it twice in the last month or so to both cars.

Empty the fuel if you can.
Disconnect the fuel lines from the pump housing on the tank wall and pull the whole thing out.

Its pretty tricky, but if you get the right fuel pump, then they usually have a diagram and instructions in it too.

The float can be tricky and the return line in the tank.
If you have never worked on a car before, its probably not the best place to start, even though its not that hard.

Dont forget to crank the engine until it stalls after you remove the fuel pump relay.... it will depressurise the system... much safer!! ;)
