? The highbeam bulb is a normal H7.

You can if you want to but you risk electrical shock if you do. You have been warned.
That's why you take the headlight out before you change the xenon bulb....

Might need to visit a dealer for a HID bulb for the Caprice.

It’s been on HID conversions, not on factory headlamps.

Do the high beam require h7 globes?
Yes, the high beam only lights are just normal H7 bulbs. The combination low/high beams are Xenon (a type of HID). If you're changing these, get the factory ones.
I've had to change both in my Caprice over time (ie since 2009) and have found that taking the front clip off is the easiest (and safest) way to go.
If you do take the clip and headlights off, make sure that you re align the headlights carefully when you put them back in as the xenons are very sensitive to alignment.

I had a dealer replace mine with just low beam hid and not the proper factory Philips d1s. Very annoying. So I’ve splurged and purchased better spec Philips globes from the uk and h7 leds for the high beams
