I am wanting to remove the resonator from my VZ Crewman but I dont want to pay some company $140-$600 just to cut it off and weld some mild steel or stainless on. So my question is,
Would it be possible to just do it myself, either cutting it off and leaving it drop off under the tray (worried about the plastic tub and tray getting hot) or finding some steel piping and welding it on.

Or is there another option that im not thinking of.

Cost me $20 to get one cut off my old car and get some 2 1/2 welded on at "Pit Stop" in Victor Harbor, SA. Its a long way from Darwin but no one should charge much more than that, even if its more than $50 I would go somewhere else.

It only took them 5 mins when they did mine, and even though they were busy and had cars waiting to go in he said just drive in and I'll do it in between cars.

Drive around to a few exhaust shops, maybe even some radiator shops and some mechanic shops.

The problem cos you have a Crewmen is some will charge more for the same job for example..

If I took a 1979 rusty Datsun in to get the resonator cut out it, or if I took a 2010 Mercedes with 20" rims, I probably would end up paying more for the Merc for the same job.

You could try calling a few places first for a quote, you don't even have to tell them the car. Something like "I'd like to get a quote to get my resonator removed and about 1 foot of 2 1/2 inch welded in"

Where is the $140-600 price coming from, is that what you have been quoted already? You can get a full 2 1/2" cat back for $200 delivered.

For the $600 it was D&T Performance though they are known to be expensive, $140 was Toms Exhaust. They seemed to think I knew nothing about cars because D&T tried to bs about how the ECU would need to be retuned if I dropped the resonator off it. But I will try a few other places.

I cant really justify over $50 for something like that, if it was something more complex yes, but not just removing the resonator.

i had twin 2.5 tailpipes replace my resonator for 100 bux, but bending was required, so u should get it way cheaper than that. i also got a quote for a single 2.5 for 60 bux

The problem is the labour and also the cost of material involved. It may take them all of 10 minutes to fix it but that doesn't mean they don't charge out labour in half hour or hour blocks. Not to mention the material. $150 is a pretty decent price. I paid $120 in Mackay and that's the usual price around here.

you got ripped off aswell... i had exhaust tips welded on, which needed an adjustment to the pipe (2 inches) cost me $20...

by the way, a good mechanice charges $100 an hour.. exhaust joint arent the expensive.. but lets use that number for shits and giggle.. that's still only $50 and piping, the joint would have a lot of that... prob $20 at most total $70.. i reckon if you pay any more your getting ripped off

Ok I ended up doing it myself. I bought some steel piping, only mild steel. for $25 (3m) I went around to a friends house, cut the old resonator out, and welded the pipe on. Sounds good and id swear there is more power there now, not much but it feels it.
