Exactly...When we did the first big day's drive from Bundy out to Barcaldine and covered 910 kilometers, spending about a total of a bit over $100, what would an extra 2 or 3 dollars been? Big deal. I too can't understand seeing brand new-ish cars which would obviously have air-con as standard (such as Calais', Fairmonts, luxury stuff like Jags and Mercedes, etc) driving around in summer with the windows down...jeez, if you can spring $60,000+ for something, you can afford the tiny amount (probably unmeasurable) of extra fuel you'd use with the air con on...
All said though, I still stand by what I said...our 2002 Lumina uses less fuel than most of the four cylinder cars we have ever owned, and I've owned a few.
