If it's the alternator it shouldnt read 13+ volts while running. But if your gonna replace it, you don't need more amps, you just need one that works.

yer but the wreckers that i go to all the alternaters are the same price so thats why i was thinking of getting a VY cause it would have more amps and it would be the same price

Had a similar problem on VR 6 cylinder Caprice. Good battery but just a tick, tick as if it were dead. Seemed like loose battery connection. Try again and eventually it will start. My son had the alternator replaced. It made no difference. New battery.. no difference. This went on for a number of months. Eventually, I got caught in a carpark. It wouldn't start no matter how long I waited before cranking again. I got the NRMA out and he correctly diagnosed a BAD EARTH STRAP. He said it was fairly common. Oh, and the car started by the time the NRMA came. The earth strap went front the inner guard to under the motor, near the oil filer from memory.
Grab an earth strap from the wrecker instead or get both it and the alternator if you want but make sure you can return the alternator.
Hope this does the trick for you.

I had a very similar problem on my VS so I thought I'd check the battery terminals, when I went to remove the negative terminal the earth cable just fell off the terminal. It was only connected by one strand of wire. New terminal and all fixed!

Try cleaning your battery terminals first before spending any money. I had a similar problem with my troopy and it was dirty terminals.

First of all, batteries can read from 11.80 to 12.xx whilst off. If your car was running you should be showing very high 13s or low 14s. So sounds like your alternator is working.
So your car winds over okay when battery is warm? Sounds like your battery is stuffed.
Do you know someone you can borrow their battery to test?
As mentioned above, clean the battery terminals also.
Good luck with it.
Click Click Click sound is the start motor isn't receiving enough power to wind over and the clicking sound is the solenoid engaging as that doesn't take much power to do. Unless you have burnout out windings in your starter but you mentioned when someone jump starts or when your car is warm the start motor winds over so not that.

Could also be a worn starter motor, my VP used to start like a champ when cold but as soon as the engine warmed up, if you switched off the motor and tried to re-start it, it would crank over very slowly. It turns out that it was slowly seizing up and the heat from the engine was creating higher and higher resistances, which in turm caused the starter to work harder and harder untill it just gave up on me.

ok 1st of all 320cca way to small lol you will kill it with a radio,2nd just cause you have full volts reading doesn't mean you have enough amps crankin back from the alternator.Get the alternator out and take it to a decent auto elecky and get them to bench test it.They will easily find out if she gives of enough amps, and if you got her running turn on the headlights and se if she runs a bit funny that is also indication of low amps.It seems you have a connection from your alternator cause your voltage goes up when running so rule that out but still sounds like alternator on the way out,and getting a bigger battery has maybe just slowed the slow death in a supermarket car park cause you just gave it more to feed off if the alternator isn't fully chargeing battery back up after startup.Oh and lazzy starter moter usually gives you a hot earth at the terminal when you touch it,not warm I mean hot. Also check lights like boot light is not staying on stuff like that cause sometimes things like that happen and you get caught out that way too.
