has anyone tried to redo the trim in their cars? door trims are fairly easy, so thats kinda sorted, until i get off my butt.. im looking to rip the material off my seats, maybe modifying the foam, a lil more huggin on the body, n the rears maybe add headrests SS or adjustable style.. does the material come off without damaging the foam? looking for advise n if anyone has any warnings.. now i realise buying an ss or berlina interior will be cheaper in the end, but i'll still want to mod it to the way i want it.. help a brother out
i havent ever done this on a commodore - but i helped my brother do his trim in an RX2 capella. with his, the material was lightly glued on all over the foam, so when taking it off it takes away some of the foam - not much, just a fuzzy coating. it shouldnt be too hard to add some foam around the bolsters, just make sure its smooth, otherwise any bumps or rough bits will show through the material in the end. we just used one of those industrial electric staplers and upholstry spray/glue to attach the new material. just a matter of spraying all the foam your covering, put the material on exactly in place and pushing into any grooves, then stapling it on the base to hold firm. i hope your good at sewing though its tricky to get the material cut and sewed together perfectly so it looks good - measure twice, cut once.
i know this sounds lame but what i have done in the past is gone to my mate, hes a trimmer, and asked to spend a day with him as his shadow. He let me measure things and cut material and show me ways of sewing (basics) and ways to glue etc. Maybe roll around and offer your local trimmer your assistance for the day in return for some knowledge. If not offer to shout the beers or something. Hands on experience is best IMO. Remember if you stuff it up its all apart of the learning process and you just have to unpick it / unstick it hahahaha Good luck buddy!
thanks for the reply sircruise. hahha yea i can sew, i aced my boxer shorts project many moons ago back in high school cheers fabs, thats actually a damn brilliant idea, never thought of that.. im a fan of the learning experience, n rather have a go myself, n stuff it up, n learn, haha u never really do till u screw it up my main concern will be the back seats getting the seam in the middle of the foam sections perfect.. =/ i might invest in some ss/berlina seats, n attempt it on my original seats.. essentially is the material thats glued to the seats, one piece, sewn n stitched prior to gluing or is it kinda done in sections? i know the middle 'seat' rear backrest is done in one piece.. material: will heavy duty do? was thinking spotlight, or can you get rolls of material, or leather (if i go down the leather path) from autotrimmers? or will i have to source it from somewhere else? so far its all up in my head and havent really done any research so far..
