I have a 2000 vs ute and sometimes the Rev Guage will drop to zero.
If I give the dash a good whack it will jump back up.
I'm pretty sure I have an exhaust leak somewhere could that interfere with it?
How can I stop it dropping down?

Your exhaust leak shouldn't be affecting your rev gauge.

Could be a bad connection or a break in the printed circuit board. To check the back of the instrument panel look up the "How To" on replacing the small plastic cog that breaks in the speedo.

Good Luck.

Mine did that with the speedo. I just pulled the cluster apart and replaced the whole speedo unit - you can do exactly the same with the tacho. It's actually incredibly easy if you take your time.

Does it drop to zero while driving, or does it sometimes not wake from zero when you start and drive for a bit.

My speedo, temp and fuel gauge all tend to get stuck at zero - especially the temp and fuel. A bang on the dash and they bounce up and stay up, so I conclude that the lubrication within the gauges has turned gummy. But they never drop to zero from an active position.

^^^ Nope that's common classic dry/cracked solder issue..3 pins in cluster but you have to remove dash, cluster apart to get to part that needs soldering lol.

Flick dash with finger left hand side of dash...most high mileage commodores eventually do that & most level 2 dash have broken odometer gear.

Should be thread in vn section sticking gauges/not working

It drops to zero while driving. A bang on the dash will sometimes bring it back up but not all the time.
Will buying a completely new cluster work?

One from a wrecker may also be bad. I'd pull the insrument panel first and check for breaks in the printed circuit board.

Good luck.

It all looks fine.
Why would it drop in and out? If there was a break I would have thought it wouldn't do anything
