    Hi Guys,

Recently replaced my intake manifold gasket. While I had the manifold off I thought I might as well replace the rocker cover gaskets. Took the rocker cover off, put the new gasket in, but the gasket didnt seal properly. The original gasket is quite thick and when the bolts are done up the rocker cover sits nice and tight. New gaskets sat in the groove properly but are much thinner and when I did the bolts up I realised that the rocker cover wasnt nice and tight anymore but had about a millimeter of play. I was able to rock (slightly)the rocker cover. Gaskets are purchased from holden, part no. 25532619. Called holden to confirm they are the correct ones for my VRII any they assured me yes, the larger ones were replaced with these ones but the rocker cover should not have any play. I did the bolts up tight, and the only way I would be able to get it to seal nicely would be to shorten the bolts. I asked holden and they suggested to bring the car down to show them, but if anyone knows the answer you could save me the trip, and hassle of pulling the rocker cover off now that the manifold is back in the way.

Also, couple of quesions while I had the thing in pieces, see photos:

1st: The rocker looks like it has two bearings on either side. I noticed a few of them are shiny, indicating wear, and a the others have brown I assume dried oil sitting on them indicating that they dont rub on anything. Should I be concerned that some are rubbing and some are not.

2nd: The rods, are they pushrods? I noticed that they werent lubricated with oil as I thought they should have been, but, like above seem to be covered with a brown dried oil? Is that ok?

    Cheers

Holden should have sold you the proper rubber gaskets which are thicker than the alternative paper and cork gaskets. Just bought and installed some of the rubber gaskets recently but didn't record the part number.

Edit: Sorry, just realised that VRII is probably a V6. My post above refers to a VS V8.

I just did mine, use the orange ones thats what I did. Yeah the GM ones are slightly different but should still fit. You sure the cover isn't fouling on any thing? You can still take them off when manifold is there. Passenger side easy, drivers a little bit of a mongrel...goes one way...

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the reply. I think I may have it narrowed down. I went and tried the passenger side the other day. It is fairly easy to remove, just takes a bit of time when things are in the way, put the new gasket in and put her back together and she was great. But Im 100% the drivers side was loose. I double checked obstructions and took the bolts out and put them back in BUT what I think the problem may be is incorrect bolts used by a previous owner. I noticed that some of the bolts are black, 3/8 with a rounded top, however some of the bolts are just a normal looking silver bolt, still 3/8. I am guessing that these might be non original and may be a little bit too long. I called holden up. The bolt comes as a little set with the housing and seal that it sits in. Each they are something like $6, and I need about 6 so I think I might just get them from the wreakers. Will try and get them this week and see how they go.

Maybe the previous owner cross threaded them...? Easy to do while doing up the rocker cover.

Thanks Wavez ... hopefully I won't need em (if I do it means I'll need alot more than rocker cover ones ;) ), but if I do, this info is great !

I had the same problem, autobarn sold the and vn and before ones which are too far to the vt onwards.........when i fitten the vn pre ones, they were too fat and the bolts would not reach. I can see your problem, yours are too this and now the bolts dont go in far enough or whatever and the covers are loose.

Even better, just keep the old ones, use turps to clean the surfaces, vasoline to keep the old ones in and just use black oil resistant silastic, or Loctite Blue max as a gasket and it seals better than anything. Only not good if you gonna keep pulling off your covers which is doubtful.

By the way, what oil are you using ? You got a bit of varnish etc in your motor. Not serious, but the same sh$t that causes our lifters to tick nicely. The push rods are thing and run vertically on an angle, oil doesnt really hang around that long, plus no need to be on the length of the push rod, only down on the lifter and up near the rocker pushrod cup. You can see from your rockers where the oil goes through. I just changed my intake gasket couple months ago. What were your symptoms of the leak. I had oil in radiator and know where else.
