hey all,

i got a bit of a weird one, the other day while driving along the highway @ 100kph with a surfboard tied to the roof rakes with occy straps. all of a sudden the board is flying though the car and come smashing down on the road.( surfboard is now toast)
the reason for this is that the roof rakes along with the black plastic strip on the roof all come flying off.

my question is has this every happened to anyone else.

do you think holden should fix it. they were genuine holden racks. with only one surfboard fitted

i guy at the dealer said he doesnt know what holden will do because they werent fitted at the dealer, but how hard can it be, put them in the holes and turn the key and whent he key is turned far enough the key come out. they are removal roof rakes so it doesnt make sense if holden wants you to return to have them fitted or removed.

what do u think they should be responsible for. i think repair of the surfboard is acceptable...

the car and rakes are under warranty.

My guess would be that they wont cover any repairs.
If you have not had them fit it and there is no proof of negligence than they are not liable.
If the actual roof rack or mount had broken then they may come to the party but if not I would guess there response would be along the lines of "you did not put it on properly" and unless you can prove otherwise would have a hard time convincing them to pay up.

You should adjust your driving style to suit the load which you are carrying.

I still do 110km/h with my Kayak on the roof. It doesnt move an inch and no sign of problems. never once have my roof racks or the kayak showed a sign of moving, so a surfboard secured properly should be right to do 100km/h. Either it was setup wrong or faulty.

OP, Did you have the bottom facing up? Doubt it means ****, but I was told once that you face the top down, that way its like a spoiler. Id imagine if you had it facing up, it would be pulling upwards at high speeds, but shouldnt be enough to break it surely.

yeah i always put the bottom up, its the only way to transport them. i board is lucky to weigh 10kg so i should be able to do like 150 now worries. the werid thing is that both of them come off not just the one and the board ws only held on by occy straps sp surely they arent that strong

.

Yeap. Setup wrong, or faulty. Prove it was faulty and not setup wrong. There is pretty much no way you can prove that.

Holden will most likely not budge, and personally, i see no reason for them too. The roofracks were supplied by them yes, but they were not fitted by them. There is no warranty to cover things not being properly installed or fitted by an outside party. It's like saying, holden should cover the warranty on the car if a tree falls on the car and damages it. Outside holdens control, outside holdens responsibility.

these are removalbe roof racks, so therefore they are meant to be removed by the owner.

DO NOT USE ROOF RACKS ON VE COMMODORE WAGONS- THEY ARE DANGEROUS AND THE TRACKS ON THE ROOF ARE INSUFFICIENT- EXTREMELY POOR DESIGN BY HOLDEN=THIS CAR SHOULD BE RECALLED SPECIFICALLY JUST FOR THIS----SEE MY PICS-Gidday mate, recently bought a 2012 commodore omega sportwagon in the hope I could use it to do SMALL odd jobs with and carry the gang in comfort. what a mistake...I purchased a set of GENUINE holden roof racks, the load rating for the use of the racks on this car said 75kilos max, I fitted the racks exactly how the manual says..EXACTLY...(my background is over 25 years working on vehicles, transmission specialist, drag car builder, servicing and tuning vehicles) I put a fibreglass ladder on top- which probably weighs 8 kilos..went to tighten the rope by simply pulling up on it and just about ripped the roof racks along with the bloody strips on the roof clean off-I haven't worked out how to add pics to this forum yet but feel free to send me your email address and I will send you the pics--the bloody strips are held on by little metal clips- it (these little tin strips)are not sufficient to carry ANYTHING let along put racks on them and try to tie something down----be warned, this is dangerous, I am going to book my car into holedn next week to see what they say when I demonstrate how I can rick the roof racks off with the roof strip. Todays date 7-6-14, will let u know how I go, extremely disappointed.
