My VSIII 5 litre, manual ute seems to run well but when it idles, seems to have trouble maintaining a constant idle. Sounds like when the revs drop it 'knocks'. Its not realbad, more annoying....

Ute has 140,000 odd kms and has been fully serviced all it's life....

    Any ideas?...

Hadn't considered that link.....if it was the 'box, how would that affect the idle? I'm not particularly mechanically-minded....

Could be as simple as a vacuum line not connected. From your description it sounds like when the revs drop really low - like under 500 - the engine will rock and shake which is what you would expect with the revs really low.
Does the idle improve with the aircon switched on? - revs should rise to allow for the aircon load.
