2006 vz v6 commodore
I’ve just bought a 2006 vz station wagon. It drives fine apart from what I would describe as a rough idle during cycle. It’ll be idling perfect then all of a sudden it will idle really rough which makes the whole car rock for a second then it goes back into a smooth idle. Apparently it’s just had all the coils replaced. I’ve noticed some sort of a vacuum hose that seems to be running between the top of the engine and the firewall obviously connected to the engine but it looks more like a garden hose than a black coloured hose I would expect it to be! So I’ll have a look at the hose and see about replacing it. I’m just worried that I may have bought a lemon! It’s got 280,000 on the clock so I’m worried that it could possibly need the timing chain replaced. It’s got areasonably good silver paint job, tinted windows, lowered with 19” black mags. Also came with r/w and 6weeks rego for $4000! I’m sure that the a/c isn’t working either so I’m hoping that it just needs to be regased. Does anyone have any suggestions about the idling and a/c? Also did I get it at a reasonable or good price? Thanks in advance to anyone that tries to help I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Have a good day

I wouldn’t be too concerned about it. Go through and replace all the hoses or take it into a workshop and get a smoke test done. They have a machine that blows smoke into the intake and it will fill everything. Every little air space, until there’s a hole somewhere for the smoke to get out. Then a light or laser pointer can spot it and the leak found.

Maybe best to get it scanned to see if there was any historical DTC’s, that may assist with the cause of rough idling.
Yes, the smoke machines work great,
I purchased one to check the VY due to the accelerating flat spot when it’s cold,
and my nephew has a L67 that would not idle properly,
So we used on that, found 2 Vac leaks in places we thought were sealed, so he fixed those, and now it runs great.
What part of Victoria are you in ?
If you were local to me, I would do a smoke test for you.

Thanks mate that’s nice of you. I’m actually in Wangaratta but my car is in Ballarat at my wife’s place till I’m licensed again end of October.

I made a smoke tester. It’s really ghetto but you could make one like it maybe?
I’ll go get some pictures for you.
It won’t work as well as a proper one, but it will be better than nothing.

Here’s what I have.
It connects to a mattress inflator to get the air flow.
you can’t have much pressure going in.
I use incense in the bucket. Put the lid on. At the very least the car will be cleansed and pure having been freed from bad spirits… and sht.

It does the job.

Good enough reason for a cigar.
The old dart has long been a tried and true method for many.
