Bloke who told me about it called it a tank but a lapping machine, as above could well be what he meant.

Well 5th gear 2000 rpm on the cluster was 102kph on the GPS so looks like despite the sticker on the diff it has the correct ratio. At least old mate did something right.
Hey mate, did you end up buying any 3.9s? I've been looking and it seems choices are junk, or junk and the only way to fix the problem with them is to run the gears through the lapping tank to get them to run smooth. But doing the latter means sending them to Adelaide.

Make it easy for yourself, get an OEM 3.7 gearset...

$930 for a genuine set. Plus 3.7 won't be short enough with a cammed L98. I did consider a whole new diff assembly at one point but due to cam I'm better off with 3 9s.

I used Motive in my XW, 3 different sets actually over its life and never had any issues with them but that was YEARS ago.
Only changed them for the ratios.

I've asked my diff tech in Adelaide for a price on gears. He said they are all not much good. He has the lapping tank and can smooth them up. They won't be like factory but they will be pretty close. Looking like I may have to send him a housing assembly and get it built. It looks like I've lucked out on getting a diff builder in Tasmania. The ZF requires specialised equipment and I don't know of any places that can do it in the state. I have a spare low km centre. I can get a housing but it's nearly 4hrs away. Not sure when I will be in the area but if I head south I'll probably grab it.

Can't remember which brand was noisier but last year could not get any new m75 gears but now apparently Spicer brand are available again...probably due to high demands.

2 Sydney mobs selling that I know of $550-$700 depending on gear ratio...when get ute back I'll probably get a set or 2 of 3.7 gears.

My fave all-rounder gears for the plastic fantastic banana top setups

For m80 & m86 diffs never stopped making them so go with what your diff bloke has in supply & let him do labour...that way there is warranty & can take mofo back.

Can never remember which brand of the main two my diff bloke says to buy lol
