Yesterday I had the mixer replaced ($600 thank you!, including the mixer for $375 that I could have bought off the web for about $245 plus freight!) and today I took the replaced one apart as the installer had shown me a large amount of gunk that looked like a mix of dirty and clean engine oil with quite a lot of dirt settled out as well when he gave the old parts to me.

The oil was on both sides of the diaphragm but as this wasn't damaged in any visible way, I decided to undo the screws holding it, but before loosening them I found that they 'needed' about a 1/10 of a turn to nip them up. When undone, the diaphragm was wet with oil and stained where it appears the gunk was passing between the plates and the diaphragm around the four screws holding the parts in place.

My question is, "Was I the victim of 'over servicing' by a zealous gas installer?"

(As I see it, the only (other) problem that a mixer can develop is a damaged diaphragm as - unlike a carby - there are no moving parts. I checked the breather hose from the head to the air intake pipe for oil to be sure that the oil wasn't getting in that way and it was clean. As a check, I put a very small piece of clean lint free cloth in the inlet between the body and intake pipe so that it is held securely by the hose clamp. I will check it regularly (each refill) to see if there is still gunk coming out of the gas tank as the installer indicated that dirty gas has been supplied by my local filling station.)

    Comments? Thanks.

Fair dinkum mate,My wife had a VL commy and my brother who is clicked on with all that is LPG, told me once that the mixers get real grottie inside,so one day I took the top off and fair bloody dinkum I could not believe the black, oily crap that collects in there,I simply cleaned it out.But then again thats probably the base of LPG,which is a by-product of crude oil anyway isnt it ?
Any money the bugger who sold you the new one knew that, because think about it,theres no oil being fed to the mixer,so it has to come from with-in the gas itself, which when under pressure resorts back to a liquid, and as for dirty gas,,well unlike petrol where you can simply empty the contents of the filter into a container and see the crap, how the hell would you even start to see the state of the LPG when its in a liquid form to determine if its dirty or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
