Running like a hairy goat

Old mans vs ute drove 5oo k's then started to run very rough, getting progressively worse.
Black exhaust residue and on cement, fuel smell in cab. Seems a very thirsty beast too
Checked plugs, leads, fuel filter and attempted to reconnect a thin hose which apparently comes from the trans?
Made no difference
Don't have a manual as yet..only bought it a few days ago
Any troubleshooting tips in order of easiest/ cheapest much appreciated.

Running rich, see if there any fault codes, could be O2 sensors or blocked air filter or pvc valve as well as egr valve.
