Rust on steering components, if left unchecked, may cause the material to be eaten away to the point that a stress failure of the component occurs. Thus at some unknown time, years down the road, a loss of steering suddenly occurs....How long depends on how thich the metal is and how aggressive the rust forms, which depends on the environment the car resides within...
I’d hate to live near the ocean. As such, I fail to understand how this is not considered a major defect? I’d report this to DOTARS as a potential safety failure which may require a recall to resolve.
The part should have had some corrosion protection applied to it during manufacture...
