can anyone help.... ? i had my inlet manifold gaskets replaced and had a "MAJOR" service done on my car on friday.. ($400) it seemed fine and everything was sweet over the w end, did about 100km.. i go to work monday and my car just stops.. start it up again and it sounds like a fkn truck wtf ?? i swear the mechanic has done something to my car... i paid to get it toed back down there and he tells me the oil pump seized and that i need a new rebuilt motor put in... ($850) i just had a fkn "MAJOR" service ?? does this sound a bit suss ?? im thinking hes droped a bolt or carbon / sealant from the inlet manifold has dislodged and blocked the oil, lifters.. can u help me please....
hmm i would think maybe **** has blocked the pick up pipe from doing th gasket........have you checked the oil level?
yeah bro, checked it and it was full... the pump itself apparently seized.. i just think its all a bit more than suss that this happens 3 days after having a "MAJOR" service... iv left it with him to fix... but do u think i have an arguement that he has stuffed it ?? would u pay for it or make them fix it at there expense ??
It could just be coincidental...really depends on how much you trust the mechanic. A reco engine for $850 will just be a new timing cover which includes the oil pump.....a full reco and you're looking at $3000 plus.
awesome.. well yeah, i dont know him from a bar of soap.. hes only very young and seems a bit dodgey.. i dont know **** about cars and think im getting takin for a ride ! i just think mechanics are up there with used car salesman lawyers and the police the scum bastards !
i have heard before that the drive tang for the oil pumps break off but that was on older 308's not heard it in many years. it really requires a little more investigation into reason of the failure. pull the pump of and see what it looks like. pull the engine and check the sump/oil pick-up for blockages etc. i'd get a second opinion personally, if it's something they have done then they should be liable to fix the problems
cheers mate... i just spoke to another mechanic and he says the car shouldnt have even started if the oil pump was seized...??? this is doin my freakin head in ! and if i do get a second opinion im going to be up for bout half of what it costs to put this other engine in !!!
the starter motor is fairly tough, the timing chain is also, the starter could have overpowered the oil pump drive and broken it allowing the engine to turn over. in theory, a seized oil pump would stop the cam/dizzy from turning as well as the crank as suggested above. seriously need someone else to look at it before the people who have it have a change to "fix" anything they possibly did. what exactly did the "service" entail? to truelly know what is wrong, damage sustained and cost of repair would require a full tear down and inspection. i suspect that the "$850 rebuild" would be as suggested above, just a timing cover and oil pump drive and gaskets and then "pray" nothing else is wrong i.e. worn cam lobes, damaged bearings etc
The first post by bradlei said "i go to work monday and my car just stops.. start it up again and it sounds like a fkn truck wtf ?" so that indicates the engine was running and the suddenly stopped...one would presume that was when the pump 'seized' - also this was after driving 100km or so over the weekend. Unless you want a lot of hassles I'd reckon that the best bet is to go back to the original mechanic and talk to him...calmly....and go with the flow. S**t does happen.
if the oil pump seized wouldnt that make the engine have low oil pressure?? having low oil pressure cuts out the fuel pump = car off no damage??
How did he figure that it was the oil pump ? Was your oil light on before this happened, or when you restarted it ?
I've seen alot of mechanics complain about lack of business lately and people staying with the dealers. Dealers are smart with their 5 year warranties. Few months back, i had to wait 2 weeks for Toyota to service the missus car ! I never heard of that before. Problem is no one trusts mechanics, some do silly things, even ones you trust. Like one broke my plug lead and left it on withough tellin me it was off. Car backfired accelerating up a hill. They seem to brake **** even yesterday on a mates car. Then you pay again. Cause competition is tight, they rush through the work sometimes....my opinion only
I'll pay that^^^^, i was only talking to a bloke today and he had is head gasket done a few months back at a mechanic he has been using since he got his gas fitted there, but he was never happy with their service. But now his head gasket needs doing again and he went to see a new mechanic and he(the mechanic) called him up to come and look at his head and showed him all the bits of the previous gasket that were not cleaned off properly before the new gasket was fitted a few months ago.
