righto. might give that a try. the previous owner said that there had been no engine symptoms leading up to it stopping. what would the large oil loss at the rear of the motor suggest?
What colour/smell is the oil?
Maybe it is torque conv issue and its fluid leak from there?
If trans pump locked up that would cause engine not to crank I think.

I had a flexplate break after a Murcott High Performance session at Sandown Park Raceway in my 355 VS Calais. Broke at two of the three attachment places and jammed. Jack the car up, remove the dust cover between the engine and trans, and use a torch to see if anything is amiss. Oil leaks from the rear main are not uncommon on the Holden V8, but I wouldn't have thought it would still be leaking after four months.

but would a trans lockup occur with a car idling in park?

Possible because the TC spins when the engine is running.

Coolant level and trans fluid looks OK?

Won't be able to undo the TC bolts if the engine does not spin over. It will have to be a gearbox off job to check.

I would be trying the easy stuff first like removing spark plugs to check for hydraulic lock and rocker covers and checking for dropped valve.

5 litres usually wear out not often they seize unless something weird happens.

Unbolt starter, take off dust cover...if you can eliminate starter or broken flexplate then it will be engine related.

If had rear main leak + thermofan issue on a v8 which have clutchfan standard...I'd be wondering how many times it's been cooked or neglected...

bit of an update....oil leak is trans fluid. would that support torque convertor or flex plate theory?
