Or ppl that badge them as holden they still have a toyaota those small diffrences that you can tell like nose and lights.

VN, VP, VR and VS were sold to Toyota

I couldn't care less it's only a badge and Holden needed the Camry for the medium sized car market.

Let's see...

Vauxhall

Looking to enter the Small car market for the first time, Holden turned to Vauxhall. The result was the 1967 HB Torana, a re-badged Vauxhall Viva. A Series 2 was released in 1968 along with a Four-Door version. The next Torana, the LC was about Australian as "Football, Meat Pies, Kangaroos and Holden Cars". A legend was born.

Mazda

Holden sent the HJ Holden to Japan as the Mazda Roadpacer.

Isuzu

Holden's first "Jap One-Tonner", the KB Rodeo was released in 1980. Facelifted in 1983, the KB went on till '88 and was replaced by the all-new TF. The TF had a vast number of facelifts throughout the years and actually made the top three selling Holden's in 2000. It was finally replaced by the RA in 2003.

Holden's first 4WD, the UBS Jackaroo, was released in 1981. It gained facelifts in 1985 and 1990. The all-new UBS Series II was released in 1992. The UBS II gained a new dash in '95. The heavily facelifted U8 came out in early 1998. A facelifted U8 was released in 2001 before phasing out late in 2003.

Holden's first imported Van, the WFR Shuttle was released in 1982. A facelift occured in '85 and then a full range adjustment in '88. It was phased out in 1991.

Holden's first imported Sports car, the YB Piazza, was a bloody flop! It was killed in '87. Now let us never speak of it again.

Nissan

Holden went to Nissan in 1983 in search of a Small Car to re-badge and eventually replace the Gemini. The car, a re-badged Nissan Pulsar, was released in 1984 as the Holden LB Astra. The LB lasted two years until 1986 when the compulsory change to Unleaded kicked in. The result was the LC Astra which only lasted a year to be replaced by the last Astra, the LD. A Sedan was offered for the first time and replaced the Gemini. It was replaced in 1989 by the Nova... see Toyota.

Suzuki

In 1985, Holden wanted a Light car, so they turned to Suzuki for help. The result was the MB Barina, a re-badged Suzuki Swift. The ML came out the next year along with Unleaded. The all-new MF was released in 1989 and was facelifted in 1991 to become the MH. The MH was replaced by the Opel-sourced Corsa... see Opel.

1985 brought another Holden Van, the micro-sized 700cc Scurry, a re-badged Suzuki Super Carry.
It died a shameful death in 1986.

Holden's first baby 4WD, the Drover, was released in 1985. The Suzuki Sierra-based 4WD only lasted until 1987.

In 2002, Suzuki and Holden got back together again. The result was the YG Cruze, a jacked-up Suzuki Ignis 5-Door with completely individual styling.

Toyota

The first cars born out of Holden-Toyota's marriage came out in 1989.

To start the ball rolling, the Astra replacement, the Nova, was a re-badged Toyota Corolla (no Seca model or Wagon version). The LE Nova was replaced by the LF in 1991. The LF soldiered on until 1994 when an all-new LG Nova was released, based on the all-new Corolla. The LG died in August 1996 when the Astra name was brought back from the dead... see Opel.

The Camira, was an undignified flop... even if the last one was a bit of alright. It was replaced in 1989 by the JK Apollo. The Apollo was basically a re-badged Toyota Camry without the V6 engine. The JK was replaced by the JL in 1991. The JL went on till '93 when it was replaced by the JM, based on the all-new "Wide-Body" Camry. The JM was the first Apollo to have a V6 engine. It was replaced by the JP Apollo in '95. The JP was killed off by the Vectra... see Opel.

The other Holden Toyota / Toyota Holden was the Lexcen. A re-badged Holden VN Commodore, the Lexcen was released in 1989. 1991 saw the VP model. Then the half-all-new VR Lexcen came out in '93. The last Lexcen, based on the VS of course, came out in '95 before dieing a shameful death in 1997... just before the VT Commodore which could have made the Lexcen a good car. Toyota filled the gap in 2000 with totally pathetic Avalon.

Opel

Holden wanted a Sports Car, so they decided to import the Opel Calibra. The 1991 YE Calibra gained a facelift in 1995 and phased out un-noticed in 1997.

Holden needed a replacement for the shitheap MH Barina, so they turned to Opel. The result was the SB Barina. Holden decided to keep the name. Overseas it was called the Opel Corsa.
It was facelifted in 1997, before being replaced by the XC in 2001. The XC has only recently had a facelift in January 2004.

Holden decided to replace the LG Nova with the TR Astra, sourced from Opel in Belgium.
The TR was already old-hat in Europe so in 1998, the all-new TS Astra arrived. It has been Holden's most successful imported model EVER. The all-new Astra arrives here in late 2004.

Everybody got sick and tired of the Apollo, so in June 1997, Holden replaced it with the JR Vectra. The JR lasted a year until 1998, when Holden started building the Sedans themselves, along with the new Wagon variant. A Series II JS arrived in 1999. In late 2000, Holden ditched the 2-litre Four, the Wagon, and added 100cc to the V6 engine. The Sedans were now Belgian again. The Vectra went very quiet over the next 2 and a half years. The all-new ZC Vectra was released on the 29th of March 2003... the very day before the "War against Iraq" started.

2001 marked Holden's return to the People Mover market with the TT Zafira. The Astra-based Zafira gained a light facelift in 2003.

Holden entered the small 4WD market again in 1995 with the UT Frontera. It lasted until 1999 when a heavy facelift was made. The MX was the first Frontera in Australia to have a Five-Door option. Another facelift occured in 2000. The Frontera phased out quietly in 2003.

In 1996, Holden re-entered the Van market with the Holden Combo. The Barina-based SB Combo gained a facelift in 1997. The all-new XC Combo arrived in September 2002.

Chevrolet

Holden's biggest vehicle ever, let alone 4WD, was released in 1998. The CK Suburban, a re-badged Chevrolet Suburban. It lasted until 2000 when it was phased out.

Holden might send the SS Ute to America badged as the Chevrolet El Camino SS. Stay tuned.

Pontiac

Pontiac wanted to revive an old legend, the GTO. So they turned to Holden and as a result, the Pontiac GTO was born. A re-badged Holden Monaro CV8.

Daewoo

Holden are thinking about re-badging and selling Daewoo vehicles in Australia. I don't know what models but I bloody-well hope they don't go ahead with this "Publicity Stunt"!

wasn't the suburban only 2WD? i'm not sure

anyway this is what i like about the yanks. they don't pretend they need 4WD as an excuse for buying a ludicrously oversized car

Theres nothing wrong with a bit of friendly trading and shuffling round in the car market. Holden used the help of other companys to get a foothold in the wider world, and now look whats happening. Holden is now the leading RWD platform manufacturer in the world! The boys at General Motors must love them.

Guys & Ladies,
Much of the sharing of cars between manufacturers in the '80's & early 90's was a combination of the needs of certain manufacturers to fill gaps in their model range and also a thing called the "Button Plan" that was orchestrated by Senator John Button.
He visualised that sharing cars and componentry helped keep costs down and also had something to do with jobs in the industries that support manufacturing. From memory, to encourage the brands to get into this plan, there were incentives thrown in like extra import credits (I think) and other stuff.
Good in theory but I always felt it just diluted the uniqueness of a brand and it reflects in the re-sale values.
Hey who remembers Toyota XT130's? they had a Holden Starfire engine backed by either a trashy Borg-Warner manual box or a Tri-matic, and they were DOGS! As bad as a Lada.. Toyota could not wait for the day they got out of that deal.
