Remove either one with a ring spanner after disconnecting the wire(s). Reinstal is reverse and if you want to you can put a sealant on the sensor threads though this is optional. Keep the radiator pressure cap on when doing this to prevent loss of coolant....also do it with a cold engine!
The sensor measures the coolant temperature - this information, along with data from other sensors is used by the ECU to calculate the correct amount of fuel the engine needs to run efficiently.
The sender simply measures the temperature of the coolant and send its information to the coolant temperature gauge in the instrument panel.

Yeah, they're behind the alternator - there's two of them.

One has a single wire, and controls the dash gauge. The other has two wires, and feeds back to the ECU. :)

His car is a VS so I assume its got the ecotec engine so its not behind the alternator. It just below the thermostat housing.

Not the best pic but have a look where the arrows are pointing. They are the sensors. (Ecotec)

Forget the charger... the sensors is on the engine. Underneath the top hose.
