had a ve with steering wheel shake between 90 and 100k/ph
absolutely no difference if braking or not, chased that for over a week
all front end was good
wheel balance twice, then swapped wheels with known good,
engine mounts were worn which cured small vibration at idle
finally new rotors and instant fix
Yeah I thought maybe engine mounts.

Sounds like they didn't balance the wheels when they moved them from the rear to the front.....

I assumed when you had new tyres fitted, they were put on the front....So go get your front wheels balanced

Save yourself the money and don't bother going getting an alignment to fix the problem because that ain't the cause and stuff going to pedders unless you have really deep pockets....Those people will rip you blind
Mate, missed the bit about him swapping the rears with the front and putting the new tyres on the rear. Like you, after the first post l had assumed because he was talking about the front end that the new tyres had gone on the front.

My experience with aftermarket wheels.

Took the VZ sedan to Jax and asked for wheel balance due to slight vibration.
Got the car back and it nearly shook itself to death (far worse than the slight vibration it had before balance)
Took it back and they did it right second time.

Then after I took the wagon for a rotate and balance and they only balanced 2 not 4 wheels (I watched them)
Never went back to Jax

Never believe the balance has been done right with some of these lazy bastards.

Under normal breaking there was no s/wheel shaking it was only when I gave them a bit of hammer that the problem showed up. Interested to see how this one plays out.

Agreed. I went through a few shops till I found one who could actually balance an aftermarket wheel

The OP only mentioned it in post #14 after others had commented....

So we both made an assumption along the same line with where the new tyres were placed, which turned out to be wrong...

Maybe if he gets the wheels balanced on the front, the problem might be solved. :)

Balancing of a wheel is the same, be it aftermarket or OEM....

Problem is, people don't take time to make sure the wheel is centred on the balancer and they don't set the balancer up properly for the wheel specs.....

Another thing I have struck is, they don't take any notice to the wheel, whilst it is spinning on the balancer for roundness.....They let the balancer spin the wheel, wack on the weights where it says, spin it again, and providing it comes up 0 0, she'll be apples...

Sometimes, a simple thing like spinning a tyre 90 degrees on a rim can improve the weight distribution required therefore reducing or eliminating the chances of a vibration....
