i actually prefer holdover, lots of spotlighting so i sight in dead at 100yrds, then hold over for 125-400 yrds, makes it more useable weapon.

Went shooting on the weekend, some how i managed to drop 4 dogs at over 200yrds with a henry .22 with stingers, held one and a half dots high. thought the first one was fluke...lol.

got another pta so time for a new .300wm

Depends on calibre. .223, .308, etc will do that.
I'm tipping my 7mm rem mag will need a new barrel in around 5000 rounds with the hot loads.

Yeah , we all fear that, but the reality is you won't wear out a barrel unless you're a pro shooter.

I mean 5000 rounds is 250 packets of ammo.

When I was fox shooting at 15,16 17 yrs old , i was putting 40 odd bullets down my Winchester Model 70 std barrel 22-250 a week end,
these were 40 grain varmiters sent down at max which was 4200fps ,
a roo shooter said I should back off a bit to save my barrel, so I backed off to around 3900.

Did 3 winters , so probably 500 of those rounds went down the barrel add a few hundred 50 grainers at 3800 plus a few hundred factory 55 gr,
so say 1200 over three years , that was the most I used it and the guns 30 years old and still dead on and lucky to have had 3000 round put down it.

So chewing out a barrel for your average joe, even if he hot loads ain't gunna happen.
So enjoy you gun without the fear you'll ruin it and if ya do , just get it re-bored bigger ;)

My 7mm isn't for hunting, I use it for LR target shooting. Not hard to fire over 100 rounds in a visit. 50 visits is a barrel gone, could do that in probably two years.
My rifles for hunting, most likely never chew a barrel out.
