ive bin a mechanic for nearly 7 years (including apprenticeship) and the wages have come far from when i started, when i was a 1st year the wages for a fully qualified mechanic were around 17-19/h but im now getting 27/h whilst most mechanics at our dealership get 27-32
wich is not bad, im only 23 and im doing diagnostic stuff all day, technical stuff that toyota themselves take from the regional centre to our workshop, some of the cars will really make you think hard and some are just plain stupid

tl;dr
mechanic wages are getting higher, if u like cars dont be a mechanic.... i hate working on my own car now hah, last thing u wanna do after working on other peoples pieces of **** all day
