FIIK I suppose because they were cheap as, and a red 202 was only $300 from the wreckers. I did hear that people used to like driving a Volvo because no one would steal it, unlike old Commi's and Falcon's of the late 80's.

I was offered a Volvo with a 202 in it for $300 when my VL was stolen and never found. I passed I wasn't about to be seen driving one.
