I am chasing a rough idle and took the top off the plenum and it was fairly stained. I am just wondering if it should be like this.

I should at this point I add that the car has an in-line valve lub system attached. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1336220472.428858.jpg

Yep normal for the ecotec. Could give it a clean but it will only be dirty in a couple months any way. Clean your idle air controller and go from there.

if your chasing a rough idle definitely clean the idle air control valve... cleaning the plenum will make it run smoother as well

That plenum chamber looks normal. In fact even cleaner than mine when I had it open to clean.

do what i did yesterday to mine, pull it off and clean it out with kero, wire brush and wire wheel on an air drill until it shows the bare aluminium again

    clean the IAC as mentioned

then fit a catch can to stop most of the oil from the crankcase gas getting in there via the t/b

take a look at your t/b aswell , more than likely itll have sludge on the butterfly too.
Clean that off with kero and toothbrush + wire brush
