not sure it'd work on a calais, but on the lower spec models, hold both up and down arrows while turning the key to start the car.

You can get your speed shown in the digital readout on the bottom of the dash by pressing and holding the SET button whilst turning the ignition to ON.

This will display battery voltage amongst other things, and you simply press MODE to scroll through, and I'm pretty sure that one of the readouts is your speed. You will loose all the other trip displays whilst running in this mode, you will need to turn the ignition OFF to reset back to the standard displays. If you really want to see the speed each time you drive the car, you will have to go through the above process.

if you have the speed alert in your car you can permanently set it too a speedo without the light flashing to do:

    1. hold all three buttons
    2. start the engine
    3. hold buttons untill 100 is displayed
    4. release all buttons and hold set until the fuel light in dash disappers and speed alert is set to 0km'h

it locks in the speedo mode if u hold all 3 buttons. The next time you start do the same and it will reverse the process and it will function as a speed alert again, if that fails disconnect the -ve lead of the battery.
