    i have a mate with a 97 VS commodore with 245,000 kms which is producing white smoke out the exhaust when accelerating. What could this be?

    Brown sludge..... well it COULD still be a head issue, if the head was warped slightly when the new gasket went in.

    If it is the head that is causing this white "Smoke" it would actually be steam :p

    Put your hand over the fumes and look at your hand, is there condensation ?

    otherwise could be burning some oil? but thats open for debate as when your accelerating id expect more blue smoke.

    Just a word of advise, I recomend NOT using chemi weld.

    Smoke colour chart
    white = moisture
    blue = oil
    black = rich mixture

    most probably just condensation if it is just on initial startup

    if its all the time then its probably a cracked or warped head (presuming the gaskets are good as you suggest)

    Well, oil does burn blue smoke, but looks hella white unless youre looking at it in the right light, is it worse when you let it idle for a while, the accelerate, or is it just all the time, at 240,000 it MAY be th rings, if it is worse after idling for like 5 mins, then valve stem seals.

    yea no desiel commys yet, but drop some desiel in the tank n watch the white smoke poor out! :)

    are we talking about 'white smoke' like on a cold morning and u exhale n everyone pretends to smoke a ciggy? that type of white smoke? but from ur exhuast? if so, totally normal..

    maybe you can give us a lil info, if it were rings, u'd be puffin out blue smoke on acceleration..

    does it blow white smoke on hot days when ithe engine is warm?

    best and easiest way to work out what the hell the smoke has in it is to get a very clean white rag, place it over the end of the exhaust and hold it there while you start the car. let it idle for a while and then give it a few light revs, then turn it off and have a look at the rag.
    if it has lots of black specs all over it - you've got oil. if it is clean but has become damp - then you've got water.
    once you've actually worked out what is burning off in the exhaust to make the smoke then you can go about fixing it....your just guessing otherwise.

    Also make sure that there is no water in the exhaust system!!! My dad washed his car last with a high pressure hose and without realizing it that he was getting water into the exhaust pipe, but it would take a while for it to get hot down that end and blow smoke so that would be very unlikely in your situation.

    I havent seen to many diesels blowing white smoke,usually black smoke and thats due to dirty injectors anyway.It would have to be pretty flogged to blow white smoke

    yes thats coz diesel engines dont have spark plugs, the deisel isnt ignited, its compressed.. but drop it in a ignition engine, n she'll bellow white smoke :)
