I used to work in the snow fields and I have heard this story so many times. Punters complaining because the chains don't fit or they put them on incorrectly.
Did you ask them to test fit the chains when you rented them? Just remember that as the driver, you are ultimately responsible for your vehicle and everything on it, you wouldn't blame a trailer hire place if you got done for unsecured load would you?

They aint that expensive, if you go to the snow more than 3 times, buy a set of decent chains.
