Yes, it can feel cooler here, though its not the humidity that is responsible. The problem as you have alluded to is getting wet(which removes heat from the body at an alarming rate) , this happens all the more easily in australian conditions as the temperatures are typically just around the freezing level. Good water proof gear is more essential in Australia then subzero reigons overseas and unfortunately a lot of ski gear doesnt fit the bill in this regard.
Yeah - new X-Trail is quite suitable for bringing to the snow. Gutless though. Not when it's outside on the second story roof  Snow is so dry! Temp hasnt gotten above zero degrees the whole time we've been her. I haven't skied on such good snow in Australia, EVER!!! Even now, it's snowing heavily outside. I suppose with record snow falls all over the world the last 12 - 18 months I shouldn't be so surprised. Only negative is that it's been overcast most of the time so no decent photos or movies.... But the snow is amazing!!!
Hahahaha!!! Are you joking? There's mostly blue and black runs, with very few green runs at Hotham. Although by international standards, most black runs in Australia (Perisher Blue, Thredbo and Hotham anyway) are only blue by European and American standards. Australian resorts can call something black when it should be blue based mostly on how narrow a run is or how many trees, rocks, drop offs there are. But still, to call it a flat hill is pretty funny. There's still plenty of steep, challenging and SUPER FUN skiing to be had off piste! But my preference is for black or blue groomed runs where I can open up long fast flowing carve turns or short linked turns when its narrower or there's more people....
Blue and Black runs mean nothing. Most of them aren't steep anywhere in Australia, as you said off-piste may be a different story. Just from all the photos you've shown it looks very tame. That's not to say Perisher or Thredbo are any better (only australian resorts I've been to), but none of the photos you've shown have steep tree lines or drops. Which makes it look like its a flat hill
True... Because I don't stop from once I leave the top until I get to the bottom. Australian runs are also very shot by nothern hemisphere standards. It was so nice in Wagrain when you could get to the top and ski for an hour or so
I thought I'd revive an older thread... Anyone heading overseas for some decent snow this year? I'm all booked in at big white for 2 weeks boarding in jan/feb with 5 other mates (over there for 4 weeks though)... Can't wait. Some real bargains to be had at the moment with the financial crisis, especially at north american resorts. It's only costing us $1300 each for 2 weeks accommodation and lift tickets, with the pub on one side of our hotel and the chairlift on the other.
What more could you want :w00t: I'm not going anywhere  I was going to go to Phuket but don't really have the funds...So I will not get to pat the tigers :cry::cry:
My flights were cheap, my dad works in the industry, so $500-600. Mates got flights for $2000 return though. Fly out australia day, return feb 20.
